Sounds

DESCRIPTION____Sounds as storytelling

It is spring. Time to think by jumping

bucket of water

Duration: 28 mins

  • Urumi Melam
  • Jungle

Rhythm binds us as a species: from West African talking drums sending coded messages across the wide expanse to flowing streams of Balinese gamelan soundscapes. This mix traces that continuum through the lens of jungle, a sound which captured the essence of the 1990s UK underground rave scene. Emerging from the intersection of classic rave sensibilities, Caribbean sound system culture and hip hop samples from the US, jungle found its way from underground subculture to mainstream prominence with distribution through pirate radio.

The opening track is drawn from the tradition of Urumi Melam, a form of South Indian drumming music often used to elicit trance-like states in religious ceremonies.

This mix is designed to be played loud. Across the set, high-octane breaks, polyrhthymic sections and syncopated textures explore rhythm as architecture.
